Cancer Fit Australia, in fact, is NOT a gym. It is an expert led cancer rehabilitation centre with a team of specialists including a medical oncologist, rehabilitation specialist, cardiologist, exercise physiologists and a dietician. It is the only rehabilitation centre of its kind in Australia. The team is focused on using exercise and nutrition to help with cancer complications, treatment side effects, recovery and cancer recurrence, in conjunction and integrated with your existing specialist team.

The initial process occurs over a 2 week period and includes:

  • An appointment with a medical oncologist to assess your medical history, cancer diagnosis and review how exercise and nutrition may aid in your cancer treatment
  • 3 appointments with an exercise physiologist to assess exercise tolerance
  • An initial appointment with a rehabilitation physician
  • A dietician assessment is recommended
  • Your case will be presented at a multidisciplinary meeting of all health professionals to form your treatment plan

Patients with a cancer diagnosis of any type, will benefit from the services offered at Cancer Fit Australia. Our return to work program is available to any cancer patient regardless of what other services are used.

Cancer Fit Australia has a range of training options designed to suit your needs. We have the option of one-on-one training as well as the option of a supportive small group environment.

Cancer Fit Australia has a beautiful Yoga space for multiple daily classes. Yoga is a form of exercise that has been studied extensively in different cancer types. The benefits of this exercise includes improvement in mood, fatigue and quality of life.

Cancer Fit Australia’s team of specialists is focused on providing rehabilitation services in conjunction with your cancer care team. We will work with your cancer care team and feed back your progress.

This depends on the type of surgery you have had. Cancer Fit Australia, will liaise with your surgical team to confirm when it is safe for you to proceed with exercise.

There is growing evidence that exercising during chemotherapy and in particular, directly before your chemotherapy is administered reduces the risk of recurrence in certain cancers, particularly breast cancer. At Cancer Fit Australia, we offer medically only supervised exercise programs. We offer patients the option of exercising during their chemotherapy and radiotherapy. We can even offer you exercise programs directly prior to your chemotherapy session and co-ordinate this with your treatment team. Please consult with your cancer care team whether it is safe for you to participate in a supervised exercise program.

This is a very common question amongst cancer patients. Each patient will have different individual needs for exercise and will vary depending on their past medical history and complications.

We have experienced exercise physiologists who are trained to assist patients with multiple medical problems and complications to safely undertake an exercise program. Our team of specialist physicians are there to medically supervise you during exercise.

More than 50% of patients do not return to full time work after a cancer diagnosis. Our rehabilitation physician is experienced at setting up individualised programs to enable patients to return to a productive work experiences.
